| Before we Begin |
| Welcome to Atlantic Internet Services! We trust that your Internet journey through Atlantic will be an eventful as well as joyful experience. In this section we will guide you through the steps of setting up an Internet connection, or as we refer to it, a Dial-up Connection. If you merely want to use your email, you will also need to go through these steps, as email works through the Internet. To do this, we need to tell Windows and your modem how to connect to Atlantic. A checklist before we can continue to do this is listed below. This document is not intended to teach you the background workings of the Internet, so if you do not understand some of the computer jargon, you do not have to panic, we're right beside you to assist you! If you're a technician who merely wants server information, see the Technical information section at the end of the document. |
| It is highly recommended that your Windows run it at least in 256 or more colors for Websites to display correctly. Refer to your computer manual, Windows manual or your computer retailer for more information regarding this subject. |
| Make sure the modem is correctly plugged in; the phone-line must be plugged into the Line connector on the modem. For external modems, modems that are not built into the computer itself but a separate box outside the computer, verify that it switched on and has power. Most external modems have a power light. Also, most modems have a Phone connector where you can plug a second telephony device, such as a telephone or fax into. Please refer to your modem manual if you're uncertain. |
| Windows might require that extra components of itself to be installed. For this, you will need your original Windows CD or diskettes. |
| Please close all open programs for the set-up procedure to continue uninterrupted. |
| The pictures depicted here might slightly differ from how they look on your computer. This can be especially true in the case of Windows 95. Also, you might have a Windows theme installed, witch change the whole look and feel of your Windows. |
| You will need a program to view the Internet pages or websites. Such programs are called browsers. Fortunately, Windows comes with a free browser called Internet Explorer. It is recommend that you use the latest version of your browser to fully take advantage of certain Internet features.
